There will be a competition for the BEST PAPER, BEST POSTER, and BEST PRESENTATION Awards for ARAL 2022. Interested individuals who want to participate in this competition will have to submit a FULL PAPER on or before May 1, 2022.

Eligibility

1.  The proponent must be a student or a teacher currently based in the Philippines;

2. The proponent should be a registered presenter at the congress.

Process

1. Proponents who wish to submit a paper for the award should be able to send the full paper by May 1, 2022. Template is found on the Notification of Reviews (by category) sent to you;

2. The paper should be fully anonymized. Any evidence of identification of authorship will automatically disqualify the paper;

3. The paper should have not been published elsewhere;

4. Submitted papers should strictly conform to the template prescribed by ARAL.

Criteria for judging

1. Articulation of objectives (20%)

It is essential in any form of research that the objectives for the study are clearly articulated.  It is important that the objectives address some real issue or concern expressed by the participants themselves, rather than something imposed upon them by managers or organizational leaders. And it is also important that these objectives remain open to amendment throughout the process. As participants develop a deeper understanding of the issue, the objectives of the research should reflect these changes.

2. Partnership & Participation (15%)

Articulating the nature of these partnerships, acknowledging how research questions are developed, how data are collected and analyzed, and how change is initiated and sustained as a result of the research process are important in determining the quality of Action Research processes.

3. Actionability (20%)

Action Research should be judged in part on how effective the process is in creating positive change. The iterative nature of action research provides opportunities for us to apply the understanding gained through these failures to the next round of research.

4.  Contribution to theory and practice (15%)

While actionability is vital to the AR process, it is still important that the work of Action Researchers make a substantial contribution to our understanding of the larger field of education. In educational AR, we tend to focus on the transferability of knowledge rather than on a more conventional notion of generalizability. EAR regards each setting as an opportunity to create local change while using the knowledge gained through these experiences to contribute to our broader knowledge of what constitute effective strategies to improve practice.

5. Methods and process (10%)

One of the ways in which this contribution to educational practice can be achieved is in a detailed and critical description of the interventions that have been developed and the methods used to assess their efficacy. By ‘telling the story’ of the research process, Educational Action Researchers are able to provide other researchers and practitioners with the kind of detailed narrative needed to understand, adapt, and apply the process in their own contexts.

6. Reflexivity (10%)

The basic process of AR  outlines the Plan, Act, Observe, Reflect cycle which is the basis of all forms of action research. In the context of AR, this focus on the importance of reflexivity reinforces the notion of the teacher as researcher – someone who is able to frame an important question of practice, to design strategies to address this question, to observe the outcome of implementation, and then, most importantly, to critically evaluate the results and, based on this analysis, to initiate the next research cycle. Educational Action Researchers should articulate this process of reflection in their discussions of their research in order to allow others to follow their sense-making processes.

7. Significance (10%)

In the end, we must ask ourselves whether or not the research matters – matters to the children in our own classrooms, their parents, and community. And whether it provides useful knowledge to our fellow educators and others interested in improving the system.

1. The ARAL Scientific Committee draws a shortlist of 5 entries from the submissions;

2. The shortlisted entries will be observed by the select Scientific Committee during the Paper Presentation;

3. The Organizing Committee consolidates the scores.
